Komodo National Park Indonesia
Like many of you, I’ve seen pictures and videos of the Komodo dragon, or lizard (Varanus komodoensis), but since it lives on the remote island of Indonesia thousands of miles away from my home in Birmingham, Alabama, I never imagined that I would have a chance to see this awesome creature in real life.

Are Komodo Dragons as dangerous as we were warned that they are?
In the wild they are very dangerous and can attack humans unprovoked |
A Komodo dragon's favored method of attack is to lie in the bushes and long grass and then pounce on their prey, usually deer, feral pigs or water buffalo.
We were impressed with our knowledgable and dedicated guide who lead us on a guided nature hike, pointing out the different varieties of flora and fauna growing on the island. For those interested in biodiversity and how uniques species have evolved on isolated islands, I highly recommend reading David Quammen’s The Song of the Dodo
